Kind Words

‘More than Words has been a great tool for opening conversations that are a bit more sensitive and harder to talk about. The range of images has made it easy for people to opt in at different levels, whether surface level, or being more vulnerable. The cards localised images have also opened up spaces to share more specific stories to Aotearoa, and also talks about indigenous, and POC people’s experiences.’

‘I have used More Than Words more times than I count. It is a wonderful way of sparking metaphor in a young person’s mind. It allows a person to articulate something internal, without the pressure of creative thinking when that feels too hard. I have found the cards often spark a deeper story. I am excited to buy more sets to help other sparkling conversations happen!‘

The More than Words card set have helped structure better conversations for the youth I work with who find it hard to speak out in open group discussions. The cards have also enabled those without a voice, an opportunity to express themselves in another way. The cards give my young people a visual medium to use as a means to interpret their ideas/reflections.

I often use Imagery Cards with my boys’ group. At the start of my sessions, I like to use the cards to check in with how the group is, and to also debrief at the end. In one of the sessions, we were doing an activity where they had to grab 3 cards that best described who they are. One of the boys asked if we could just use the sensitive cards during that session. Each of them was able to relate deeply to the sensitive cards, it gave them the opportunity to go in-depth and who they are and where they come from. This really allowed the group to bond really quickly and establish trust deeply and personally.’

‘I love the resource More than Words, its a must-have for people who run groups! I work in a high school, and can use these cards for all sorts of things- I use them in groups for young people to tell me about their week, something about themselves, or what they've learnt in that lesson. They can be helpful in mentoring sessions to help spark ideas and things to talk about based on memories these cards can trigger. My favourite thing about these cards are how fresh and local they are, with cultural and topical cards that young people in Aoteaora can connect with.’

These cards are seriously awesome! Used them for an end-of-year youth event to help bring things to a close, was such an amazing moment to share and the cards helped our rangatahi express themselves so much! Can't stop raving about these cards!!

Symbol cards are a great way to spark conversation, go deeper, facilitate group discussions and create space for reflection. Salvation Army friend and designer Sabrina David has created a set with conversation in mind! More Than Words is an excellent set of conversation cards that can be utilised in group discussions, youth or kids ministry, small groups, staff or team meetings and more.

We used these today in a meeting with a colleague and they were great! More Than Words are durable, comprehensive and visually stunning, plus they support a young, Christian designer!

We run a group for at risk Mums, we use the cards as an ice breaker at the beginning of each session. They work brilliantly as a tool to help people open up more about what's going on for them and how they're feeling. They are open ended and adaptable so you can use them however is best. Other community groups, social services agencies and counsellors would benefit from having use of Imagery Cards!

Love it. We use them regularly for our meetings with our RAs. They have also started using them for their floor meeting and pastoral care checks. Very useful. Men suck at speaking their emotions so it'‘s a good way for them to express how they are feeling. Used them a lot in my last job at Ignite Sport and 24-7 not as much now. But our RAs use them much better. There is something about pictures over words.
